K Pop! Foods Review



It's going to be a very interesting Memorial day picnic for us. I get to use four different sauces sent over by K Pop Foods. The company story on how they got started is so interesting, and I want to share that with you first, before I introduce you to the sauces, and the recipes I used them with.


Growing up, nothing was more fun than sharing food. In Atlanta, Theo 's grandma would bring everyone together to feast. In San Francisco, Chef Chris Oh, was busy experimenting in the kitchen with Kraft cheese and top ramen noodles. And on the other side of the planet, Mike exposed his military buddies to Korean cuisine in Seoul. All three a world apart, not knowing that soon they would be together making Korean food and soju.



Mike and Theo met at UCLA Anderson, and late nights at the business school transformed into late nights at the Korean BBQ. Seeing their friends happy reactions to the tasty and social taste of Korean food ignited an idea. They should introduce Korean tastes straight to the people! Using Theo's grandma's special recipe for Korean gochujang sauce, Mike and Theo made their first bottle of KPOP sauce.


Shortly after they began KPOP Foods, they captured the attention of Celebrity Chef Chris Oh. As founder of Seoul Sausage Co, co-founder of Hanjip, managing director of Escala, and recipient of Food Network's Cutthroat Kitchen, Esquire Network's Knife Battle, and Food Network 's Great American Food Truck Chase, among others, he is an accomplished and talented chef who has made his home at KPOP Food.


So it is with great honors, that they gave me the opportunity to taste and review about their Korean sauces. And it's much more special, that the sauces are a fresh series of sauces created by the celebrity chef and Food Network Star, Chris Oh. All created at his, award-winning restaurants and crafted from family recipes, I get to try the, hot KPOP XXX Sauce, the tangy KPOP, Kimchi Mayo Sauce and the sweet KPOP Honey Glaze Sauce. With that being said, let's grill.


To celebrate this Memorial day, it will be all about grilling of course. And the first thing on the grill is chicken wings. For the wings I will use only the sauces from K pop, no other ingredients. I want the sauce's to shine, and bring forth the flavor.


The first set of chicken wings on the grill we're coated with the K Pop Foods, honey glazed sauce. After washing the chicken wings off really well, I placed them into a bowl and poured one cup of the sauce over the wings and let them soak for fifteen minutes. By that time the grill was hot, and ready for the food. I then took the wings and placed them on a rack, letting some of the glaze sauce drip off, because the chicken had soaked a lot of the sauce up, and if I needed more I would mop it on during grilling. Mopping the wings was only needed one time. And it was now ready for the taste test. The sauce had a sweet and somewhat savory taste to it. The ingredients that the sauce is made of includes honey, gochujang, jalapenos, garlic, and lime. This is what gave it the sweet and savory taste, that complimented the chicken so well. The kick from the jalapenos is nothing that will kill your taste buds, its very tolerating. And since this family can take heat, it was perfect. The K PopFoods, honey glaze sauce worked very well with grilled chicken. But it would be also great on tacos, or even a fish of any type. Use it as a glaze as I did, or as a condiment, either way, the taste is over the top.


Then I made a second set of wings, and for these I used the K Pop Foods, XXX sauce. This surely kicked it up a notch as far as the heat level. This is a wonderful sauce if you like heat, it’s a slow kick that grows on the palate slowly. As far as it being used as a glaze for the chicken wings, it made them burst with flavor. It's a full bodied sauce, that clung to the chicken the whole time it was grilling. What starts of as a sweet taste on your tongue, ends with a kick at the back of your throat. Its really nothing over powering, in fact I was asked if there was any more left in the bottle. The best part is that the K PopFoods, XXX sauce does not over take your foods flavor, it only compliments it. Thinking outside the box, this is a great sauce for a egg bake, or even to drizzle on top of your pasta.


Now on grill number two, I have been slow grilling my rack of ribs. As the ribs cooked, I lightly mopped them with K Pop Foods, KPOP sauce. The sauce, as the other two did, gave the food a rich deep color. Now this sauce gave the ribs a very unique taste. And it should, because the recipe for the sauce is a 70 year old secret family recipe. If its this good now, you can just imagine how good it was back then. Now as with the other two sauces, it has a ingredient call "gochujang". This is a Korean chili paste, that is a fundamental ingredient in the Korean cuisine. It is made from red chili pepper flakes, and as far as I can taste, adds a ton of flavor to these sauces. The heat comes from gochujang chili, but is nothing over the top where it burns all the way down. The taste is unique and deeply rich, and paired perfectly as a glaze for my ribs. It's the sweet, heat flavors that you can't get enough of. Not only great for grilling ribs, but I would try it with a pizza topping, or even with any type of sandwich. It is a heat lovers dream come true.


Now it's not Memorial day, with out a good grilled burger. So that was the last thing I grilled for the day. Everyone placed the last bottle of K Pops Foods product on their burger. And that was their Kimchi Mayo sauce. This mayo is made with a combo of chili peppers, garlic, lemon, and vinegar. The taste on the burger as a condiment, well like I said everyone used it. You get spicy and tangy at the same time. And when it melded in with the cheese and the burger, it was a burst of heaven in your mouth. K Pop Foods, took mayo, and kicked it up by pairing ingredients that gave it a over the top taste. The flavors give you spice, they give you tang, and yet its cool all at the same time. The K Pop Foods Kimchi mayo sauce, is creamy just like mayo is. The color is a nice mellow orange, and a taste that makes you crave for more. The Kimchi mayo sauce is a great condiment as I used it, but would work with so many other dishes. Use it as a dip for fries, incorporate it into your meatloaf, or in any recipe that you would use mayo for.
