Basic Recipe for Perfect Rice

Ingredients:

 

1 cup long-grain white rice

1 1/2 cups water

1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)

1 tablespoon butter or olive oil (optional)

Instructions:

 

Rinse the rice: This step removes excess starch, which can lead to mushy rice. Place the rice in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold running water until the water runs clear.

Toast the rice (optional): In a saucepan over medium heat, add the butter or oil (if using). Once hot, add the rinsed rice and cook for a minute or two, stirring constantly, until the rice becomes translucent.

Add water and seasonings: Pour in the water and add salt (if using). Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.

Tips:

 

Use the correct water-to-rice ratio. The general rule for long-grain rice is 1 1/2 cups of water for every 1 cup of rice. However, some varieties may require slightly more or less water. Refer to the package instructions for specific guidance.

Don't peek! Resist the urge to lift the lid and stir the rice while it's simmering. This can disrupt the cooking process and lead to mushy rice.

Season your rice! While salt is a simple way to enhance flavor, you can also experiment with herbs, spices, or broth instead of water for added depth.
