Amish cooking is known for its simplicity, freshness, and hearty flavors. This recipe for a typical Amish meal features a variety of dishes that are sure to satisfy your appetite.

Ingredients:

Mashed Potatoes:

4 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and quartered

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

1 cup milk

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Chicken:

1 whole chicken, cut into pieces

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

2 tablespoons olive oil

Green Beans:

1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces

1/2 cup unsalted butter

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Corn:

4 ears fresh corn, shucked

1/2 cup unsalted butter

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Bread:

1 loaf of homemade white bread (or store-bought)

1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

Instructions:

Mashed Potatoes:

Boil potatoes in a large pot of salted water until tender, about 20 minutes. Drain and mash with the butter, milk, salt, and pepper.

Chicken:

Season the chicken pieces with flour, salt, and pepper. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the chicken until browned and cooked through, about 15 minutes per side.

Green Beans:

Steam the green beans until tender-crisp, about 5 minutes. In a separate pan, melt the butter and add the green beans, salt, and pepper. Cook until heated through.

Corn:

Grill the corn over medium heat for 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until cooked through. Cut the kernels off the cob and melt the butter in a pan. Add the corn, salt, and pepper and cook until heated through.

Bread:

Slice the bread into 1-inch thick slices and spread with softened butter.

Assemble the meal:

Serve the mashed potatoes, chicken, green beans, corn, and bread on a large platter or individual plates.

Tips:

For a vegetarian option, substitute the chicken with a roasted vegetable protein like tofu or tempeh.

Add a side salad to the meal for a refreshing touch.

Customize the meal with your favorite vegetables and side dishes.

Enjoy this hearty and satisfying Amish meal!
