Edible Pretzel "Sweet Snakes"

These adorable and delicious sweet snakes are the perfect treat for a children's party, a themed movie night, or a fun afternoon baking project. They combine the salty crunch of a pretzel rod with the creamy sweetness of vanilla candy coating, decorated with colorful sprinkles and candy eyes.

The best part is how customizable they are—let the kids pick their favorite colors for the scales and watch their creations come to life!

Yields: 10 Snakes

Prep time: 20 minutes

Setting time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

  • The Base: 10 long pretzel rods (standard size).
  • The Coating:
    • 1 cup bright green candy melts (or your preferred snake skin color: yellow, blue, etc.).
    • 1 cup light green candy melts for contrast (optional, but adds a fun "scales" effect).
    • Substitution: If you can't find candy melts, you can use white chocolate chips tinted with oil-based food coloring (gel or powder works best).
  • The Decorations:
    • 20 edible candy eyes (available in most baking aisles).
    • 20 red mini M&Ms or red starburst candies (softened slightly and rolled into tiny balls) for the forked tongues.
    • ¼ cup assorted colorful sprinkles (jimmies, nonpareils, or confetti) for "scales."

Equipment:

  • A microwave-safe bowl or a double boiler.
  • Parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  • A tall, narrow drinking glass or mug (for easier dipping).
  • A piping bag or small plastic bag (for drizzling contrasting colors).
  • Tweezers (optional, for placing eyes).

Instructions:

1.      Prep Your Workspace: Lay out a large sheet of parchment paper on your counter or a baking sheet. This is where the snakes will rest to set.

2.     Melt the Primary Coating:

o   Place the bright green candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl.

o   Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until the melts are completely smooth and fluid. Be careful not to overheat them, or the candy will seize and become clumpy.

3.     Dip the Pretzels:

o   Pour the melted green candy into a tall, narrow drinking glass. This makes it much easier to coat the pretzel rods evenly.

o   Dip each pretzel rod one by one into the glass, coating it about three-quarters of the way up.

o   Gently lift the pretzel and let the excess chocolate drip back into the glass. Lay the coated pretzel rod onto the parchment paper.

4.     Decorate (The Fun Part!):

o   Scales: Immediately after dipping, while the candy coating is still wet, generously sprinkle the top and sides of the pretzel with your colorful sprinkles.

o   Eyes: While the coating is still wet, place two candy eyes near the top (dipped) end of the pretzel. If the candy has started to dry, use a tiny dab of leftover melted candy as "glue" to attach to the eyes.

5.     Add the Tongue (Before it Dries!):

o   Take one red mini-M&M (or a tiny rolled ball of red Starburst).

o   Gently press it into the very tip of the dipped end, between the eyes, to create the snake's mouth.

o   Pro-Tip for Tongue: If using a Starburst, you can cut a small notch in the end with kitchen scissors to make it look like a forked tongue before placing it.

6.     Optional Contrast Drizzle:

o   Melt the light green candy melts (or white chocolate) using the same method as step 2.

o   Pour the melted light green into a piping bag (or a small Ziploc bag with the corner snipped off).

o   Drizzle the contrasting color back and forth across the main green snake body to create a fun, textured "scale" pattern.

7.     Let it Set:

o   Leave the snakes undisturbed on the parchment paper for at least 30 minutes, or until the candy coating is completely firm and set. (You can speed this up by placing the baking sheet in the refrigerator for 10 minutes).

8.     Serve and Enjoy: Once set, carefully peel the snakes off the parchment paper and serve! Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
