Stuffing is a beloved side dish often associated with Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. However, it can be enjoyed year-round, and countless variations exist. This recipe combines the classic flavors of bread, herbs, and sausage with apples' sweet and tangy notes. It's a perfect accompaniment to roasted turkey, chicken, or even pork.
Ingredients:
1 loaf of day-old bread, cubed
1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed
1 large onion, chopped
2 celery stalks, chopped
2 apples, peeled, cored and chopped
1 cup chicken broth
1/4 cup dried sage
1 tablespoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 egg, beaten
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium
heat until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
Add the onion and celery to the skillet and cook
until softened.
In a large bowl, combine the bread cubes, sausage,
onion, celery, apples, chicken broth, sage, thyme, salt, and pepper. Toss to
coat.
Stir in the beaten egg.
Transfer the stuffing to a greased baking dish.
Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and
heated through.
Tips:
For a crispier crust, bake the stuffing uncovered
for the last 10 minutes.
You can substitute turkey sausage or vegetarian
sausage for the Italian sausage.
If you don't have dried sage or thyme, you can use
fresh herbs.
Add a handful of chopped walnuts or pecans for a
bit of crunch.
Serve the stuffing warm with your favorite main
course.
This apple and sausage stuffing recipe is a
delicious and easy way to add a flavorful twist to your next meal. Enjoy!
