Salisbury steak was a popular dish in the 1950s, and for good reason! It's a hearty and comforting meal that's perfect for a family dinner. This recipe is a classic 1950s version, made with ground beef, breadcrumbs, and onions.
Ingredients:
1 pound ground beef
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup onion, finely
chopped
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 tablespoon
Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black
pepper
2 tablespoons
vegetable oil
1 cup beef broth
1 tablespoon brown
sugar
1 teaspoon cornstarch
2 tablespoons cold
water
Instructions:
In a large bowl,
combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt,
and pepper. Mix well.
Form the mixture into
4 patties, about 1 inch thick.
Heat the oil in a
large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties to the skillet and cook
for 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned.
Remove the patties
from the skillet and set aside. Add the beef broth and brown sugar to the
skillet. Bring to a simmer and cook for 2 minutes, or until the sauce has
thickened.
In a small bowl, whisk
together the cornstarch and water until smooth. Add the cornstarch mixture to
the sauce and stir until combined. Cook for 1 minute more, or until the sauce
has thickened.
Return the patties to
the skillet and coat them in the sauce. Cook for 2-3 minutes more, or until the
patties are cooked through.
Serve the Salisbury
steak with mashed potatoes and your favorite vegetables.
Tips:
For a richer flavor,
use a combination of ground beef and pork.
