Blackies famous hot dogs Review

I was given the opportunity today to try some famous hot dogs. The dogs come from Blackies, located in Cheshire, CT. Not only famous for their hot dogs, but their mustard, and their hot pepper relish as well.

Their traditions have been strong for eighty years, and you can understand why with one bite.

This family-owned business knows its stuff. The hot dogs have a nice crisp skin on the outside that gives you a snap when you bite into them. Pair it with their mustard or hot pepper relish, and your taste buds enter a whole new world. It’s plain to see why visitors come from all over, just to try the family's secret recipes. The best part is, their signature hot dogs and even their burgers have not changed as far as the recipes.

The beginning of Blackies, started way back in 1925, with creators Mary Mahoney and Art Blackman. And still today their dream is alive and well, serving their famous dogs, that many smother with their homemade relish.

You can read Blackies story on their website, it shows you how dedicated they were, and never gave up even after a fire in 1945.

And if that is not enough, if you live in the area they will bring their famous Blackie hot dogs to you. Now let me tell you about my experience with the hot dogs, mustard and hot pepper relish I received today.

The hot pepper relish is homemade by Blackies Fresh every day. It’s not overbearing, just the right amount of heat. Each bite of the hot dog gives you a nice sweet heat.

Now I decided to grill my Blackie hot dogs and try them not only plain, but one with the mustard they sent, and one with their hot pepper relish. The neat thing is after they start to cook, you see slits in the dogs, and this makes them cook nice and straight. The dog has a skin on it, and you not only feel the snap but hear it with each bite you take. These iconic hot dogs are the true deal. My grandson ate two, and that’s saying something. The whole family at Blackies makes these products so special. These hot dogs are even more special coming from Martin Rosol's. No one has hot dogs like Blackies!

What puts the Blackies hot dogs over the top, and dance on your taste buds, is when you add their signature hot pepper relish. The relish is made fresh every day and it shows in the taste test. They pick the fresh peppers right in their hometown, you don’t get any fresher than this. The hot pepper relish makes these dogs even more special, delicious, fresh, and just the right sweet heat.

Now the Blackies hot dog with the mustard, another product made fresh. It is good, with a nice spice to it. Blackies mustard can be used on burgers and included in other recipes as well, like potato salad. The mustard from Blackies is a spicy brown, but not overbearing in spice. You can lick it off the spoon it’s that good. The formula for this mustard is another family secret. And the formula has not changed from its original origin. I even made potato salad as a side using Blackies spicy brown mustard.

Ingredients

8 cups Golden Potatoes cut into bite-size pieces

10 Large Eggs

1 tsp Salt

Water to cover eggs and potatoes

1.5 cups Mayo

1 cup Mustard Blackies spicy brown

Salt and Pepper to taste

Guidelines

Roughly chop potatoes into small pieces.

Put eggs and potatoes in a big saucepan.

Fill the saucepan with enough water to cover the potatoes and eggs.

Put some salt in.

When the potatoes are fork-tender, boil the eggs and potatoes together over medium-high heat.

After the potatoes get soft, use a colander to drain the eggs and potatoes.

After the eggs have cooled, peel them.

Put peeled eggs and tender potatoes into a large mixing basin.

Take a wooden spoon and crack the eggs apart.

Mix the eggs and potatoes in a bowl with the mayo and Blackies spicy brown mustard.

Mix well by stirring.

As required, add more salt and pepper

Blackies welcomes you to try their famous hot dogs, relish, and mustard, but not on Fridays. They close that day to keep up with their Irish Catholic tradition.

If you are in the area, you have to stop by Blackies hot dog place, or even take a road trip, your taste buds will not be disappointed.
