For the Reese's Filling and Decoration:

  • 1 cup chopped Reese's peanut butter cups

  • 1/2 cup mini Reese's peanut butter cups

  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

  • 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream

  • Extra peanut butter cups for decorating

For the Birthday Message:

  • 1/2 cup white chocolate chips

  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil

  • Extra melted chocolate or decorating icing for writing "Happy Birthday Justin!"

Instructions

Step 1: Bake the Chocolate Cake

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.

  2. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  4. Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract.

  5. Beat with an electric mixer until everything is combined.

  6. Slowly stir in the hot coffee or hot water. The batter will be thin, and that's perfectly fine.

  7. Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans.

  8. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.

  9. Remove from the oven and allow the cakes to cool in their pans for about 10 minutes.

  10. Carefully remove the cakes and place them on cooling racks.

  11. Allow them to cool completely before frosting.

Step 2: Make the Peanut Butter Frosting

  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and creamy peanut butter until smooth.

  2. Slowly add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time.

  3. Add the vanilla extract and salt.

  4. Pour in the milk a little at a time until the frosting reaches a smooth, spreadable consistency.

  5. Beat for another 2 minutes until light and fluffy.

Step 3: Assemble the Birthday Cake

  1. Place one cooled chocolate cake layer on a cake plate.

  2. Spread a generous layer of peanut butter frosting over the top.

  3. Sprinkle the chopped Reese's peanut butter cups over the frosting.

  4. Place the second cake layer on top.

  5. Frost the top and sides of the entire cake with the remaining peanut butter frosting.

  6. Smooth the frosting with a spatula.

Step 4: Make the Chocolate Drizzle

  1. Place the chocolate chips and heavy whipping cream in a microwave-safe bowl.

  2. Microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring between each interval, until smooth.

  3. Allow the chocolate to cool slightly.

  4. Drizzle the chocolate around the edges of the cake, allowing some to run down the sides.

  5. Sprinkle chopped Reese's peanut butter cups and mini Reese's around the top.

Step 5: Add Justin's Birthday Message!

  1. Melt the white chocolate chips with the vegetable oil in the microwave, stirring until smooth.

  2. Transfer the melted chocolate into a piping bag or a small zip-top bag with a tiny corner cut off.

  3. Carefully write "Happy Birthday Justin!" across the top of the cake.

  4. Add a few extra mini Reese's peanut butter cups around the message.

  5. Refrigerate the cake for about 20 minutes to help the chocolate decorations set.

Now you have a beautiful homemade Reese's Peanut Butter Birthday Cake ready for Justin's special day!

What Makes This Reese's Birthday Cake So Delicious?

The best part of this cake is the combination of chocolate and peanut butter. The chocolate cake is soft, moist, and rich, while the peanut butter frosting is smooth, creamy, and full of that wonderful roasted peanut flavor.

Then you get little bites of Reese's peanut butter cups throughout the cake, adding even more chocolate and peanut butter goodness.

The chocolate drizzle brings everything together, making this cake look like something you would find in a bakery.

If you love Reese's peanut butter cups, this cake is definitely going to be a favorite!

What Goes Great with Reese's Peanut Butter Cake?

A rich chocolate and peanut butter cake deserves something delicious to go alongside it.

Here are some wonderful choices:

  • Cold Milk: You can't go wrong with a tall glass of cold milk and a slice of chocolate cake.

  • Vanilla Ice Cream: A scoop of vanilla ice cream balances the rich chocolate and peanut butter.

  • Hot Coffee: A cup of coffee pairs wonderfully with the chocolate flavor.

  • Chocolate Ice Cream: For the ultimate chocolate lover!

  • Whipped Cream: A little homemade whipped cream makes every slice extra special.

  • Chocolate Milk: Perfect for anyone who wants even more chocolate!

Helpful Tips for Making the Perfect Birthday Cake

  • Make sure your cakes are completely cool before frosting.

  • Use creamy peanut butter for the smoothest frosting.

  • If your frosting is too thick, add a little more milk.

  • If your frosting is too thin, add more powdered sugar.

  • Chop some Reese's cups into small pieces for the filling and save the larger pieces for decorating.

  • Use a piping bag to make the birthday message look neat and special.

  • Refrigerate the cake if your kitchen is warm or if you need the decorations to set.

How to Store Reese's Peanut Butter Cake

Store the finished cake in an airtight cake container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Before serving, allow the cake to sit at room temperature for approximately 20–30 minutes. This helps soften the frosting and brings out the wonderful chocolate and peanut butter flavors.

You can also freeze individual slices. Wrap each piece tightly in plastic wrap and place in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months.
