Dutch Apple Pie

Dutch apple pie is a classic American dessert that is loved by people of all ages. This delicious pie is made with a flaky crust, a sweet and tart apple filling, and a touch of cinnamon. It is the perfect dessert to enjoy on a cool fall day.

Ingredients:

For the crust:

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces

1/2 cup ice water

For the filling:

6-8 large apples, peeled, cored, and sliced

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup packed light brown sugar

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces

For the topping:

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions:

Make the crust: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Cut in the butter using a pastry blender or two knives until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the ice water a tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough just comes together. Divide the dough in half, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Make the filling: In a large bowl, combine the apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and lemon juice. Toss to coat the apples evenly.

Assemble the pie: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Roll out one-half of the dough on a lightly floured surface to a 12-inch circle. Place the dough in a 9-inch pie dish and trim the edges. Pour the apple filling into the prepared crust.

Roll out the top crust: Roll out the remaining dough to a 12-inch circle and cut into strips for a lattice top. Weave the strips over the apple filling.

Bake the pie: Brush the top crust with milk and sprinkle with the topping mixture. Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F, then reduce the temperature to 375°F (190°C) and bake for an additional 35-40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.

Let cool: Let the pie cool on a wire rack for at least 2 hours before serving.

Tips:

Use a variety of apples for the best flavor.

For a thicker filling, add a tablespoon of cornstarch to the filling mixture.

Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Dutch apple pie is a delicious and satisfying dessert that is perfect for any occasion.
