Clarence Birdseye of Montclair, New Jersey, witnessed the Inuit employ ice, wind, and temperature to immediately freeze newly caught fish during his travels across what is now Northern Canada in the early 1900s. Birdseye's food preserving technology was inspired by a hunting trip to Canada in the 1920s.
