The poor
boy sandwich, today is known as the po-boy sandwich, was invented in 1929
at Martin Brothers' French Market and Coffee Stand in New Orleans during a
streetcar strike. Bennie and Clovis Martin were both streetcar conductors from
the mid-1910s until they launched their eatery in 1922. When the Electric
Street Railway employees went on strike in 1929, the Martin brothers gave out
sandwiches to the strikers, and so the poor boy sandwich was born.
