The
dessert for after our Fathers Day, dinner tonight is going to be amazing. And!,
it will be my family and I, first time eating either type of the dessert sent byKern's Kitchen.
Kern's Kitchen is located in Louisville , KY. The history of the company is amazing and I will
share that with you first.
Kern's Kitchen's handcrafted, starting over 60 years ago, Kern's Derby-Pie chocolate
nut pie is a real and genuinely tasty Kentucky custom. Leaudra and Walter Kern, together with their
son, created the very first Derby-Pie dessert at the Melrose Inn in Prospect,
Kentucky, in 1954, and still to this day Kern 's Kitchen makes every pie, one
at a time, according to that world famous secret recipe. Premium chocolate and
choice walnuts are folded into an indulgent filling and then baked in a
delicate crust. The name "Derby Pie" was originally drawn from the
hat. With such a unique pie, the name was registered with the U.S. Patent &
Trademark Office as well as the Kentucky commonwealth.
Kern's Kitchen was gracious with their famous pies, sending their one pound famous
chocolate nut pie, and a one pound pecan pie, and two small chocolate nut pies.
These, famous pies, have been featured on, The Today Show, Food Network, The Travel
Channel, and so many more places!
The
pies are easy to make, just take them out of the box and warm in a 350 degree
oven for around 8 to 12 minutes. I did mine at 10 minutes and they came out
perfectly.
It's
amazing how the Kern's Kitchen still to this day, makes their pies. Still hand
cracking their own eggs for every pie they make, and sorting threw their own walnuts, and better yet making their own hand crafted dough. To date, this is a 4th
generational family owned business, that makes their pies with the same love
and same secret recipe since 1954. You just know with all that love and care,
these pies are going to taste amazing.
First
up is the Kern's Kitchen famous chocolate nut pie, and before I go on I must tell
you, my house smells amazing. Even full belly's are looking forward to tasting
these treasures.
Now
the pies come fully baked, all you have to do is warm them up. They can be
served with a dollop of ice cream on the top, but we all want to taste the true
chocolate nut pie with out masking it with any other food. And can I tell you,
it was the right choice. You can just thaw the pie and serve it, but I think
you will enjoy it warmed up. The chocolate for the pie is a decadent mixture of
chocolate chips, and in each bite you get your chopped walnuts. The crust is
buttery and not flaky at all, truly holds the pie when cutting it, instead of
falling apart like so many other's do. Every bite you take it just melts in
your mouth. Now the pie serves eight, but be careful, you could eat this whole
one pound pie by yourself, if your not careful! What makes this pie even more unique, they
have some how imprinted their name on the crust. Well, you won't forget who
made the pie for sure. Kern's Kitchen truly makes a wonderful pie, you taste
the time, the love, and the quality.
I
didn't let anyone get to filled on the first pie, we all had one more to taste.
This time it was Kern's Kitchen golden pecan pie. Now as far as pies, this is
our first time trying either type. So far, so good! This is also a Kern's Kitchen one pound pie, made the same way, with the same famous secret recipe.
Again the name of the company is imprinted onto the crust, it gives the crust a elegant look. Just like the walnuts for the chocolate nut pie, Kern's Kitchen sorts threw
their own pecans, to make the golden pecan pie. After warming it for up with
the other pie for ten minutes, it’s the perfect warmth. Its easy to cut,
because the crust holds the pie firmly not letting it fall apart. The pecans
are whole and are plentiful on the top for sure. The bottom mixture of
the pie is a syrupy goodness that the pecans rest upon. The texture of the
bottom filling is smooth, and rich. And in every bite the combo of the pecans and filling are so decadent. The pecans are very fresh, as if they we're picked that day. After you eat both
these pies you can see why they are a Southern royalty, and tradition. The
pecans even after warming in the oven hold their crunch.
The
pecan pie, and the chocolate nut pie, will play a symphony in your mouth. And
they we're the perfect ending for after Fathers Day dinner.
If
you love a good pie, then visit Kern's Kitchen, on their website, as well as
Amazon.
They
will compliment any dessert for any occasion.
Also, thank you to Kern's Kitchen for my calendar!
