Today for the first time, I get to taste some new
products, I have not, ever tasted nor heard of. The products are biltong, and droewors,
from, the company Ayoba. The company is located in Washington , D.C.
These types of beef sticks are strong in the South
African culture. And the van Blommestein family missed it, the sounds, the
smells, the colors, and the vibrancy, of South Africa. So after living in South Africa for almost 18 years, they dusted off the old cookbook
and starting creating their own recipes. A family hobby that turned into a
successful business.
This great company "Ayoba", donates a
portion of their profits to Martha's table, and Capital area food bank, with in
turn provides healthy foods, and affordable clothing, and education to the less
fortunate.
What is Biltong? Well I wanted to know to. It is a
form of a dried cured meat, that originated in Southern African Countries, such
as Zimbabwe , Namibia , Botswana , and Zambia . The cuts vary, either long or flat. So let me tell
you now about the taste.
The first bag I tried was the, Ayoba, traditional Biltong. My first impression on taste is that it has exquisite taste. The
texture is so very tender, and very easy on the chew. All of this traditional Biltong is made with one hundred percent grass fed beef. Then the cuts get
marinated and seasoned, with natural spices. After that the process is to air
dry them for fourteen hours. Then its time to eat! Every piece you eat is high
in protein, is all natural, and sugar free. Making them a great snack for
anyone. Using few ingredients gives you the best taste of the meat. This is not
to be compared to jerky. The entire process to make it is totally different,
and has different tasting results. The Biltong is a wonderful alternative to
other protein foods. And with no sugar, any one can enjoy the Biltong. They are
keto and also paleo, with no artificial ingredients, no nitrates either. So you
get a healthy guilt free snack. In every bite you take, you get a nice beef
flavor profile. And you can eat them any time any where.
Another Biltong sent over from Ayoba, is the spicy. It
is their traditional Biltong, with a great kick. If you like spice, then you
will love this Biltong. With a taste of not only cayenne, but chili powder, you
can't go wrong. A nice fresh approach to a beef snack. Made the same way, with
the same process and same great grass fed beef. The kick is perfect, the spice
level fantastic. It’s a very premium Biltong and really enjoying my first
bites. Not only good out the bag, but you can get creative and top some
sandwich's, or even a burger with some. That's what I did, a burger with a bits
of spicy Biltong. When making my burgers, I broke the spicy Biltong and added
it into the hamburger then made my patties. Didn't need any other flavor, a
little cilantro, and a fresh avocado slice on top, and your ready to go. The
taste adding it to a recipe will surprise you. The seasoning of the Biltong
gave the burger the only spice it needed.
Also included in my package was a bag of Ayoba, Droewors.
This is a new food item for me to. Also a South African snack food, that has
coriander seed. Taste similar to the Dutch droge worst. Ayoba, made this beef
stick snack with flavor unlike any I have ever tasted. Very fresh, and earthy
at the same time. Using fine cuts of beef that is then grinded, with four
natural spices. Then stuffed into a natural casing, and dried for five days.
Nothing artificial added at all. Just a clean, fresh, natural tasting beef
stick, that explodes with flavor. A great snack to grab, knowing you are eating
all natural ingredients, nothing loaded with chemicals or fake ingredients. You
will love the texture, the taste, even the smell when you open the bag.
